Chief Financial and Operations Officer

 

The Marine Mammal Center, an equal opportunity, non-profit employer, is seeking a candidate for the position of Chief Financial and Operating Officer. The mission of the Center is to rescue and rehabilitate injured and sick marine mammals, and to release them back into the ocean once they are healthy.  The Center also conducts important research and educates the public in the protection of marine mammals and their habitats. 

 

The Chief Financial and Operations Officer provides both strategic and financial leadership for the Center (an organization with a 2009 operating budget of $5.2Mn) reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with department heads, the Board of Directors, and the Audit, Finance, and Compensation and Human Resources Committees of the Board.  The CFO/COO also works with attorneys, auditors, consultants (i.e. payroll, benefits, insurance) and other professionals in the execution of his/her duties.

 

The CFO/COO supervises the Finance and Human Resources staff, participates as a member of the Center’s management and operations teams, and collaborates with the animal care and revenue generation teams, as appropriate.

 

In addition, the CFO/COO directs all aspects of the finance, accounting and human resources operations in consultation with the Executive Director including, but not limited to, cash and investment management, budgeting (operating, grant and project budgets), financial reporting and analysis, grant reports, contracts, risk management, endowments, human resources compliance, and estate administration.

 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare the annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and analysis of financial statements for the Executive Director, Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Work with Membership department staff to review and evaluate direct mail program plan in conjunction with budgeting and financial reporting needs.
  • Work with program staff and grant writer to prepare grant budgets and complete required reporting.
  • Work with construction and other project teams on planning, project management, budgets, and cash management
  • Develop and implement accounting and human resources-related policies, in conjunction with the Executive Director and Board committees.
  • Coordinate and prepare for the annual audit including Audit Committee meetings.
  • Work with the Audit Committee to identify and hire new auditors as needed.
  • Monitor pending bequests for budget purposes and work with outside attorneys on complex estates.
  • Serve as Center liaison to strategic community partners (e.g., the office of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area).
  • Oversee the management of the Center’s information technology resources, establishing and implementing a strategy to achieve goals in concert with consultants and staff.
  • Work with the insurance agency to ensure that all insurance needs are met and schedule a periodic insurance review with the Finance committee to evaluate the adequacy of coverage.
  • Act as administrator for the Center’s 401(k) plan.
  • Sell any stock gifts.
  • Work with consultants and Compensation and HR Committee of the Board to evaluate and select benefits plans for the Center’s staff.

Position Specifications:

  • Minimum of ten years experience in accounting and financial management.
  • Experience with cash management, budget development and financial reporting, investment and/or treasury functions, highly desirable.
  • Experience in business management and strategic planning.
  • Ability to manage Board relationships and work closely with Board committees and outside attorneys, consultants, and other professionals required.
  • Management of, or work with, human resources functions preferred, and familiarity with retail operations desired.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success in a team-managed work environment.
  • Familiarity with not-for-profit organization management and reporting preferred.
  • CPA preferred.

 

This is a full-time, exempt position with competitive benefits. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
