Because every job and every hiring manager is different, there aren’t necessarily rules that are always applicable to the interview process. Executive search firms only present those candidates that they are confident will control the interview and will be a viable option for the client as far as meeting the needs that they have. To be the confident candidate and right solution for a prospective employer, it’s important to focus on what you can do for an employer. Once you have an idea of how you’re the appropriate solution, prepare the interviewer before your meeting. To do so, make initial contact and assure them that it’s your intention to reveal how it is you will be able provide a solution for their problems. During the interview, you must then take responsibility for solving the problems; they want to know your general approach, so as to avoid making a risky decision. Be sure to introduce yourself to the interviewer before you meet. Ask the recruiter or another contact to make the introduction so that they already have an idea of who you are. Then, as you move through the process, enlist and get excited about being a part of the team. This is where you have to be proactive. The company wants to see that you’re excited to be “one of them.” As you continue to progress, ask for problems to solve during the interview so that you can demonstrate your skill set and problem solving abilities. Finally, want the job but don’t be desperate; keep in mind that your worth is what makes the employer want to hire you- do your research and know how you can add value to the company. Ultimately, you have to be the one to offer the value; sell them on YOU as the solution.
