Interview Etiquette Begins the Minute You Walk in the Door

2009-03-02 (All day)

You are being observed and sometimes scrutinized the moment that you walk in the door of your potential employer. Although it’s likely that you won’t be interviewing with those that are passing in and out of the office when you arrive, they are each forming opinions and may, by way of the relationship that they have with the hiring manager, have a say in the final decision. With this in mind, it’s important to remember that you’re a guest. Be careful not to have a sense of entitlement. Because your demeanor (along with your appearance and behavior) comes under scrutiny the moment you arrive for an interview, make an effort to not check your Blackberry, be a good driver (this is a measure of character), keep your commitment if you were recommended by a search firm especially, and be careful not to have an excessive sense of self importance. As the guest, be sure to honor and respect the host.
